Wolverines Dominate Mount Vernon Rival in Season Opener

West Potomac beat Mount Vernon 51-7 to kick off the season.

It was an explosive night for the West Potomac varsity football team on Thursday.  Competing against rival team Mount Vernon, the Wolverines fought through 16 penalties to win the first game of the season.

West Potomac players were relentless offensively, with 569 total yards by the end of the game.  Senior running back Brandon Johnson carried the ball for 175 yards and made two touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Caleb Henderson went 6-12 on completions for 150 yards and three touchdown passes, while senior quarterback Charles Ruiz Hernandez went 7-7 for another 122 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, the Wolverines were equally stellar.  It wasn't until the end of the third quarter that the Majors were able to put any points on the board. The 49-yard run by senior running back Sadiq Oyedele led to the team's only touchdown. The play, however, was too little, too late.

Despite the impressive victory, West Potomac head coach Eric Henderson had his mind set on areas of improvement after the game.  "We obviously need to get rid of the holds," Henderson said.  "There were too many mental mistakes."

Henderson was also keen on seeing a week of tough practice and preparation.  "We feel like we have to improve," said Henderson, "if we want to be competitive against Centreville."
