Town Council Reschedules Local Elections

Council makes move after Virginia General Assembly fails to act on town's request.

For the first time next year, voters in Herndon will choose candidates for mayor and Town Council on the same day that they vote for president of the United States.

The Herndon Town Council voted Tuesday to move town elections from May to November, according to an announcement from the town government. On a 4-3 vote, the council adopted an ordinance to reschedule the election date from the first Tuesday in May to the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, beginning in 2016.

In December, the council asked the Virginia General Assembly to authorize the date change by amending the town’s charter. But the legislature failed to vote on the measure in January during its 2015 session.

Under legislation passed by the General Assembly in 2000 that allows localities to change election dates, the Town Council reconsidered the date change Tuesday at its regular public hearing.
