Davis told Mitchell that the victim was a woman in her 40s, who had been stabbed multiple times in the upper body.
In response to a 911 call, officers were dispatched shortly after 7 p.m. to a bus stop in the 7400 block of Richmond Highway, where they found the body of a woman who had suffered from trauma to her upper body, according to Capt. Chris Cosgriff.
Although the officers immediately began to administer medical aid, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Cosgriff said.
Investigators believe the woman had arrived at the bus stop between 6 and 7 p.m, according to Cosgriff. Detectives are working to identify the victim and contact her next of kin.
"We believe that our community members in the area may have some information about this," Cosgriff said, during a news conference at the scene of the homicide. "It is a very busy area. There's a lot of foot traffic. There's a lot of vehicle traffic."
This is the third homicide in Fairfax County that police have investigated since the beginning of the year, according to Cosgriff.
