America Recycles Day in Loudoun County

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed Thursday, Nov. 15, as America Recycles Day in Loudoun County.

In 2011, Loudoun increased its recycling rate by 1.2 percent, recycling over 97,000 tons of material. More than 78 percent of the materials were bottles, glass, paper, plastic, and cans collected through residential and business recycling programs.

The Loudoun County government also participates in recycling programs. During the past year, employees recycled over 100 tons of cardboard and paper, as well as plastic, metal and glass containers.

Specialists from the Loudoun County Department of Construction and Waste Management suggest the following tips for local residents who would like to recycle:

• Contact your collector, HOA, or town government to find out what you can put in your recycling container. 
• Contact the town or your HOA to get a recycling container. If you do not have curbside service or a recycling dumpster, consider recycling your materials at one of the eleven drop-off centers located in the county or contact a permitted collector to pick up your material. 
• If you find yourself in a place that does not recycle, look into the resources offered by the Department of Construction and Waste Management to find a way.
