Common AC Unit Issues

Keeping your home cool in the summer and beating the heat is a necessity for most of us to maintain a comfortable living environment.  Many of us do this with a central heating and cooling system or a more portable and versatile window air conditioning unit that enable us to set a temperature we desire and have it maintained through efficient operation of the air conditioning system.

There are several air conditioner issues that can arise with an A/C unit to cause it to either malfunction or cease operating altogether, or can jeopardize the efficient functioning of your equipment.  While it is recommended that use a professional technician to diagnose and correct air conditioner issues, you can sometimes identify problems yourself (and possibly fix them).

  • If your unit is making excessive noise, like a wailing sound, this is usually caused by the fan belt becoming dislodged.  Sometimes putting the belt back in place can fix this, but the bearings may also need lubrication or replacement.
  • Frozen coils can cause a blockage in the unit, which keeps Freon and air from circulating properly.  A simple calibration check can remedy this issue.
  • Blocked ventilation grills can increase the workload on your A/C unit.  This extra work requirement on the unit can cause the motor to burn out sooner.  Fix this by keeping the vents clean and obstruction free.
  • Faulty drainage can cause mold or mildew.  If your air conditioner is leaking water into the room or simply isn't draining like it should, this could be caused by a rusted condensation pan or the drain itself might be clogged.

Choosing a maintenance plan for your A/C unit can help you avoid many common air conditioner issues by keeping your unit operating at peak performance.  For more information on equipment maintenance and how to keep your system at optimal functioning levels, find a qualified HVAC contractor or service provider in your area.
