School Board member Deana Griffiths, Ashburn District, shared a list of what it cost Loudoun County taxpayers when the former School Board decided to change the mascot at Loudoun County High School in 2020. The change was completed in 2022.
This was just to rename the mascot, not rename the school. Costs for renaming a school, which is being considered by the new School Board, is anticipated to be much higher because it encompasses more pieces than just mascot changes. The School Board has identified nine schools in its district that it is considering renaming due to what it deems racist names or affiliation.
The first school renaming committee, for Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School in Leesburg, will be established in early October. At its Sept. 24 meeting, the Leesburg Town Council passed a resolution selecting Vice Mayor Neil Steinberg to be the Council representative to the renaming committee.

Despite 11 of 12 citizens who publicly spoke against renaming Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School at a Town Hall event on Sept. 17, the school system decided to move forward with the renaming process anyway leaving many wondering why a Town Hall meeting was even held if the School Board was not going to respect what the majority of participants said at the meeting.
Griffiths is opposed to renaming schools. She has requested of the school system a cost estimate to rename all nine schools, but has not yet received that information.

The renaming committee will be officially appointed during the Loudoun County Public School Board meeting on Oct. 8 and will hold its first two meetings at Smart's Mill Middle School on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 6 p. m., and Thursday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m.
