Gum Springs Middle School Teacher selected as Virginia SAR's Lawrence American History Teacher of the Year

Gum Springs Middle School 8th Grade Social Science and Global Studies teacher Katy Knapp was awarded the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution award as the 2026 nominee for the National Society Tom & Betty Lawrence History Teacher of the Year award. She was nominated by the Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter in Loudoun County. Mrs. Knapp was presented an acrylic commemorating her selection and awarded a check for $500.

Her application will be forwarded to the National Society Sons of the American Revolution where she will compete against submissions from other State Societies. If selected as the national winner she will receive a professional educational opportunity at a national seminar and a significant cash award.

Katy received her award at the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution Annual meeting in Glen Allen, Virginia. The award was presented by Virginia SAR President Dr. Michael Weyler and sponsoring chapter President Barry Schwoerer. The Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter serves Loudoun County.
