Leesburg Joins 10th Annual Water Conservation Challenge

LEESBURG, VA — Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk is joining others across the country in the 10th annual Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. The campaign, which runs through the end of April, promotes civic action around water conservation and sustainability.

Leesburg residents can participate in the challenge by making online pledges to reduce water waste and pollution. Residents are also encouraged to explore ways to improve the overall health of their community's ecosystem.

People can make their pledges online, and the challenge's website also offers water-saving tips. Participants will be eligible to win prizes including $3,000 to put towards their utility bills. Residents can also nominate a local charity to win a Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

"This pledge is but a small step to not only spread awareness but to ensure our water remains both clean and abundant in the future,” Mayor Kelly Burk said. "When you conserve water, you conserve life."

In last year's challenge, participants from all 50 states pledged to reduce their water consumption by a total of one billion gallons. They also promised to reduce their landfill waste by more than 20 million pounds.

The 10th National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is sponsored by the Wyland Foundation, a charity dedicated to environmental causes. The Wyland Foundation says they encourage "environmental awareness through community events, education programs, and public art projects," according to their website.
