sgt Maj John Champe SAR honored Revolutionary War Patriot Johann Philip Spengler in Strasburg

On June 6, the Col.James Wood II chapter of Virginia SAR Sponsored a combined Revolutionary War Patriot and War of 1812 veteran grave marking for Johann Philip Spengler at the Old Strasburg Cemetery in Strasburg, VA. Spengler migrated from Pennsylvania after serving as a private in the York County, Pennsylvania militia during the Revolution. In Strasburg he married Regina Stover daughter of Peter Stover, founder of Strasburg. When the War of 1812 broke out, Patriot Stover was commissioned a Lt Col and served in the Virginia militia.

The event was attended by virginia SAR President Darrin Schmidt. Virginia SAR Chapters participating included: George Mason, Culpeper Minutemen, and Sgt Maj John Champe. DAR chapters participating included: Fort Loudoun and Pack Horse Ford (WV). The Virginia Society Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge also participated.

Sgt Maj John Champe members Ken Bonner and Barry Schwoerer participated in Color Guard and a three-shot volley using reproduction flintlock rifles and muskets.
