Coles District To Get New Fire Station
The groundbreaking is scheduled for Monday, with completion of the $7.4 million building due late next year.

INDEPENDENT HILL, VA — The Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue will host a groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday for the construction of the new Coles District Fire Station. It will replace the current station at 13712 Dumfries Road (Route 234), just south of the intersection with Hoadly Road, according to Kim Hylander, a fire department spokeswoman.
The new 21,400-square-foot station will house a fire engine, tanker and heavy rescue equipment, the fire department said in a statement. It will also support a basic life support (BLS) ambulance, hazardous material response units and a brush truck. (For more local news, click here to sign up for real-time news alerts. The completion of the new station is expected in the late fall of 2018. The current building, with 18,500 square feet, will be razed upon completion and occupancy of the new building, Hylander said.

The Sorensen Gross Co. will build the new station under a $7.4 million contract with Prince William County.
The station’s design and strategic location in the middle of the county "will help to increase the level of service provided" to residents, the statement added.

The first fire station at the Dumfries Road site was opened in 1949, when the Coles District Volunteer Fire Department was formed. The original building was replaced in 1979 by the current building, the county fire department said.
In 2014, the Coles District Volunteer Fire Company merged with the county fire department. More than 40 fire and rescue personnel are assigned to the Coles District station.
