Liberia’s Master Plan Wins Virginia Award

A Master Plan for the restoration of Liberia Plantation was named the Outstanding Preservation Plan during the American Planning Association’s Virginia Chapter Annual Awards held last week. Liberia, built in 1825, was occupied by both Confederate and Union forces. The plantation was visited by President Lincoln during the Civil War, and was asuccessful dairy farm and family home.

The Master Plan was produced by the planning firm of Rhodeside & Harwell with significant input from staff and a Citizens Advisory Committee. The plan will help the site meet its potential as an attraction, a park amenity, and source of revenue for the residents of the City of Manassas, while still respecting its historic value.

The plan includes detailed design and management guidelines for phasing improvements incrementally over time so that citizens and visitors can enjoy the beautiful 18-acre site for events, walks, historic interpretation, and private rentals.

The plan provides for parking, gardens, and event space, and includes a blueprint for restrooms and office space. Liberia house restoration efforts have revealed significant Civil War graffiti throughout the house that was left by occupying soldiers.
