Micron Says It's Now Producing Most Advanced Memory Made In US At Its Manassas Plant

MANASSAS, VA – Micron has begun manufacturing the most advanced memory technology ever produced in the U.S. at its plant in Manassas, the company announced Friday.

According to the company, the 1α DRAM node now being produced in Northern Virginia can provide long-lifecycle memory for critical applications in the automotive, defense, aerospace, industrial, networking and medical device sectors.

Micron says its Manassas facility supports more than 3,100 direct and community jobs.

Tom’s Hardware reports that Micron’s $2 billion investment in the Manassas expansion is supported by $275 million in CHIPS and Science Act funding.

A press release by Micron noted that state and local officials from Virginia joined Micron’s CEO at a ceremony on Friday to commemorate the advance, with U.S. Secretary of State Howard Lutnick delivering remarks. “We are finally building memory semiconductors in America,” Lutnick said. “Micron’s massive national $200 billion investment will quadruple American production of industrial, automotive, defense and aerospace memory chips. In addition, Micron is bringing leading-edge memory production home to America, continuing the building of our advanced manufacturing resurgence.”

Micron says its facility in Manassas is the only fully owned facility of its type in the U.S., and that of all memory chips in the world, about 2 percent are manufactured in the U.S., all at its Manassas, Virginia facility.
