NoVA Reports Most Coronavirus Hospitalizations Since Mid-June

After the eastern region reported the most cases Monday, Northern Virginia was leading the state Tuesday with 215 new coronavirus cases.

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 861 new coronavirus cases and 11 new deaths on Tuesday. In all, there have been 108,282 total cases, and 2,396 Virginians with COVID-19 have died. There have been 8,849 coronavirus hospitalizations to date.

The northern region reported the most cases Tuesday with 215 after having the most cases on Sunday. The southwest region was next with 198 cases, followed by the eastern region — which had the most cases Monday — with 175 cases. The central region had 162 cases and the northwest region had 111 cases.

As of Tuesday, 1,385,832 tests have been completed in Virginia, an increase of 16,795 from Monday. The statewide positive average of tests dropped to 6.8 percent as of Aug. 14, the most recent date provided by the VDH. It's the first time the 7-day average for positive tests was below 7.0 percent since July 30 when it was 6.9 percent.

Statewide, hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients increased from 1,173 to 1,253 between Monday and Tuesday. By region, the current patients include 459 in the eastern region and 306 in the northern region. It is the first time since June 17 that hospitalizations in Northern Virginia were above 300. On June 17, Northern Virginia reported 303 people in hospitals with COVID-19 and on June 16, 339 people were hospitalized with coronavirus in the region.

Elsewhere in the state, 209 hospitalization were reported in the central region on Tuesday followed by 159 in the southwest region and 120 in the northwest region.

According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, 13,910 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals statewide.

The current COVID-19 patients include 163 on ventilators and 300 in the intensive care units. Ventilator use among all hospital patients remains flat 20 percent, and ICU occupancy dropped from 73 percent to 70 percent between Monday and Tuesday. The 2019 average ICU occupancy in Virginia was 67 percent.

On Tuesday, no hospitals were difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies within 72 hours. Between Aug. 9 and Aug. 17, at least one hospital in Virginia was reporting difficulty obtaining PPE. At one point during that period, three hospitals were reporting trouble getting PPE.

Here are the latest case updates for our coverage areas between Monday and Tuesday:

  • Alexandria: 3,146 cases, 287 hospitalizations, 61 deaths; increase of 16 cases and three hospitalizations.
  • Arlington County: 3,264 cases, 438 hospitalizations, 135 deaths; increase of 18 cases and one hospitalization.
  • Fairfax County: 17,154 cases, 1,975 hospitalizations, 537 deaths; increase of 84 cases, six hospitalizations and two deaths.
  • Fairfax City: 102 cases, 11 hospitalizations, seven deaths; one case removed.
  • Falls Church: 63 cases, nine hospitalizations, six deaths; no changes.
  • Loudoun County: 5,552 cases, 361 hospitalizations, 115 deaths; increase of 24 cases.
  • Manassas: 1,723 cases, 125 hospitalizations, 22 deaths; increase of seven cases.
  • Manassas Park: 540 cases, 50 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of two cases.
  • Prince William County: 9,989 cases, 820 hospitalizations, 179 deaths; increase of 65 cases, hospitalizations and one death.
  • Fredericksburg: 428 cases, 44 hospitalizations, three deaths; one hospitalization and death removed.
  • Spotsylvania County: 1,642 cases, 104 hospitalizations, 36 deaths; increase of 21 cases and one death.
  • Stafford County: 1,534 cases, 165 hospitalizations, 10 deaths; increase of 28 cases and one hospitalization.
