Positive Average Of Tests Below Peaks For All Virginia Regions
Testing numbers have increased since regional positive rates of tests peaked in April or May.
VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 734 new coronavirus cases and four new deaths on Monday. In all, there have been 107,421 total cases, and 2,385 Virginians with COVID-19 have died. There have been 8,767 coronavirus hospitalizations to date.
After the northern region led the state in new cases on Sunday, the eastern region reported the most new cases on Monday. The breakdown of new cases by health region is 232 in the eastern region, 179 in the northern region, 133 in the central region, 107 in the southwest region, and 83 in the northwest region. Fairfax County led the state with 75 new cases, followed by Virginia Beach and Richmond with 50 each, Chesapeake with 45, and Henrico County with 40.
As of Monday, 1,369,037 tests have been completed in Virginia, an increase of 19,577 from Sunday. The statewide positive average of tests has remained steady in the last month. The 7-day average was 7 percent as of Aug. 13, and the rate has remained in the 7-percent range during the last month.

The positive averages in two regions — the northern and northwest regions — are below the statewide average. Here's a look at the regional 7-day positive averages compared to their peak averages:

It's worth noting that Virginia's testing numbers are higher than they were when positive test rates peaked in April or May. On Aug. 1, the statewide 7-day average was 15,694 daily tests, much higher than the 4,872 daily test average on May 1 and 1,760 on April 1.
Statewide, hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients fell from 1,184 to 1,173 between Sunday and Monday. By region, the current patients include 412 in the eastern region, 278 in the northern region, 211 in the central region, 154 in the southwest region and 118 in the northwest region.
According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, 13,827 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals statewide.
The current COVID-19 patients include 158 on ventilators and 281 in the intensive care units. Ventilator use among all hospital patients remains flat 20 percent, and ICU occupancy changed from 70 percent to 73 percent between Sunday and Monday. The 2019 average ICU occupancy in Virginia was 67 percent.
There is one hospital reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment within 72 hours and one hospital reporting difficulty obtaining other medical supplies within 72 hours.
Here are the latest case updates for our coverage areas between Saturday and Sunday:
- Alexandria: 3,130 cases, 284 hospitalizations, 61 deaths; increase of 26 cases
- Arlington County: 3,246 cases, 437 hospitalizations, 135 deaths; increase of 17 cases
- Fairfax County: 17,070 cases, 1,969 hospitalizations, 535 deaths; increase of 75 cases, one hospitalization and two deaths.
- Fairfax City: 103 cases, 11 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no change
- Falls Church: 63 cases, nine hospitalizations, six deaths; increase of one case
- Loudoun County: 5,528 cases, 361 hospitalizations, 115 deaths; increase of 17 cases and one hospitalization
- Manassas: 1,716 cases, 125 hospitalizations, 22 deaths; increase of six cases
- Manassas Park: 538 cases, 50 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of three cases
- Prince William County: 9,924 cases, 815 hospitalizations, 178 deaths; increase of 34 cases
- Fredericksburg: 428 cases, 45 hospitalizations, four deaths; no change
- Spotsylvania County: 1,621 cases, 104 hospitalizations, 35 deaths; increase of 14 cases and one hospitalization
- Stafford County: 1,506 cases, 125 hospitalizations, 10 deaths; increase of 10 cases
