Police: Gainesville Man Tried To Strangle Woman in Hotel Room

A Gainesville man is behind bars after his arrest Saturday for allegedly trying to strangle a woman in her Manassas hotel room.

The suspect, Robert Darrell Umphreys, 54, of 7708 James Madison Highway (Route 15), and the victim, a 42-year-old Centreville woman, are known acquaintances, according to the Prince William County police.
Umphreys has been charged with strangulation and is being held without bond at the Prince William-Manassas regional jail. His next date in court is May 20.

Police responded at about 10 a.m. Saturday to the Days Inn at 7249 New Market Court in Manassas to investigate the report of an assault.
The victim told police that Umphreys came to her hotel room uninvited. During the encounter, he allegedly grabbed the victim around her neck and began to strangle her, causing her to lose consciousness.
When the victim woke, the suspect was gone and police were contacted. Minor injuries were reported. The officers later arrested Umphreys at his residence without incident.
