School Board Appoints Kiefer to Fill Vacancy

Ilka Chavez resigned in January. Kristen Kiefer will serve until a special election in November.

The School Board of the City of Manassas unanimously voted Wednesday to appoint Kristen Kiefer as a member of the Board. Kiefer will take over the seat previously held by Ilka V. Chavez, who resigned in January.

“The School Board was very fortunate to have nine qualified applicants who were interested in filling this vacancy,” said Tim Demeria, Chairman of the Board. “We believe that Mrs. Kiefer will be a good fit for the School Board and will serve our community well. We hope that all of the applicants will remain active and involved in our schools.”

Kiefer’s involvement in the local schools and community has been extensive, including serving as president of the Baldwin Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), committee chair for Mayfield Intermediate School Parent Teacher Association (PTA), a participant in the 2015 MCPS Parent and Community Leadership Academy, and as a representative on the school division’s Gifted and Talented Advisory Committee. Additionally, her community involvement includes leadership roles with the Greater Manassas Baseball League (GMBL) and the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America.

Kiefer says she feels impassioned and empowered to ensure the best for all children in the City of Manassas. “I am ready, willing and able to expand my service to the School Board and the students and families of our community,” she said. “I look forward to helping Manassas City Public Schools soar to new heights.”

Kiefer will be sworn in on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7:00 pm. at City Hall and begin her term immediately. She will serve until Nov. 3 when a special election will be held to fill the remaining year of Chavez’ original term.
