3 Events To Mark Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday In McLean
Among the highlights is the "We Shall Overcome" tour featuring music to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

MCLEAN, VA — The McLean Community Center is closed on Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 20), but three events will follow to celebrate the civil rights leader and the upcoming Black History Month in February.
The events at The Alden Theatre from Jan. 22 to 30 will showcase film, dance and music. First up is a free screening of the 2014 French-Mauritanian film, "Timbuktu" at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22. The film focuses on the collision between a community of pious Muslims and the jihadists that overtake their city. Reservations are not required.
The second event in the lineup is a performance by Chicago’s Hiplet Ballerinas at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25. Hiplet (pronounced "hip-lay") is an innovative dance form that combines classical pointe technique with African, Latin, hip-hop and urban dance styles. The company was founded in the 1990s and has received worldwide recognition with shows in Germany, France, Spain, South Korea and Hong Kong. Tickets are $30 for the general public and $20 for McLean Community Center tax district residents.

Last is a performance by multi-genre artist Damien Sneed to honor Dr. King at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30. His "We Shall Overcome" performance" reflects on the triumphant and victorious moments of African American history. The Alden is the only DC area stop in the 40-city "We Shall Overcome" tour and features the Howard University Gospel Choir. Tickets are $45 for the general public, $25 for seniors and students and $20 for McLean Community Center tax district residents.
