MCLEAN, VA — An 8-year-old boy who was trapped in a McLean storm drain was rescued Tuesday evening by Fairfax County fire and rescue personnel, according to reports.

Just before 5 p.m., the boy was digging a tunnel through the snow that had accumulated outside his home in McLean, when he suddenly slid into the drain and got stuck, according to WUSA9.

"The original plan was, 'How are we going to get him out?'' Battalion Chief Steven McFarland told WUSA9 reporter Melissa Kim. "We looked at different ways, as far as shoveling the snow, and we looked at trying to physically remove the grate that was also frozen solid."
