Abandoned Kayak Causes Scare At Great Falls

Luckily it turned out to be a kayak without a person inside near the strong river currents.

GREAT FALLS, VA—A kayak overturned near Great Falls Park caused a bit of scare Friday morning, but all turned out well after a search.

Around 10 a.m., officials from Great Falls Park reported the overturned kayak at the base of the falls, where the currents can be deadly. First responders from U.S. Park Police, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue conducted a search on scene.

The search and rescue teams and the Park Police helicopter determined there was no person in the water.

Because the strong rip currents near Great Falls can pull a person down to the bottom of the river, swimming is prohibited in this area of the Potomac River. Kayaking is allowed but requires specialized training.
