October In McLean: Artfest, Halloween Events And 'The Addams Family'

MCLEAN, VA — Residents can browse artwork, run a community 5K, attend theater performances and celebrate Halloween during a month of events featured on the McLean Community Center’s October calendar.

The schedule also includes a performing arts scholarship application deadline, weekly game nights and an Oct. 28 governing board meeting at which members are scheduled to vote on the center’s fiscal 2028 budget.

Unless otherwise noted, activities take place at the community center, 1234 Ingleside Ave. The center advises residents to check its website for the most current event information.

Alden Theatre Performances & Events

Friday, Oct. 2: Ballet Hispánico New York — “MUJERES: Women in Motion”

The performance begins at 7 p.m. at the Alden Theatre and is open to all ages. The program features work by three choreographers exploring identity, conscience and cultural inheritance.

Oct. 9-11 And Oct. 16-18: McLean Community Players’ “The Addams Family”

McLean Community Players will present the musical comedy over two Friday-through-Sunday weekends at the Alden Theatre.

The story follows Wednesday Addams as she falls in love with a young man unlike her unconventional family. The center describes the production as family-friendly, with humor for ages 8 and older, but notes that it includes mild innuendo and mature language.

Tuesday, Oct. 13: “Treasure Island Reimagined: Jane Hawkins and the Pirate’s Gold”

The adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel begins at 7 p.m. at the Alden Theatre. The event is listed for all ages, with a recommendation for ages 8 and older.

The production follows 12-year-old Jane Hawkins, whose life at a seaside inn in 1754 England changes when a stranger arrives with a mysterious trunk. Three performers provide character voices and sound effects alongside 1,200 projected illustrations, presenting the story as a live-action graphic novel.

Sunday, Oct. 25: Borisevich Duo

Pianist Margarita Loukachkina, violinist Nikita Borisevich and their pianist son will perform at 2 p.m. at the Alden Theatre. The chamber music program is open to all ages and will feature classical works.

Foreign Language & Performing Arts Films

“The Vanishing,” listed for ages 13 and older, will be shown Thursday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 3 p.m., and Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“Tea with the Dames,” listed for ages 16 and older, will be shown Thursday, Oct. 22, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Community Events

Sunday, Oct. 4: McLean Artfest

McLean Artfest will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at McLean Central Park. The free event will feature original work by more than 30 Mid-Atlantic artists, along with live music, interactive art, children’s activities and food trucks.

Saturday, Oct. 10: McLean 5K And OFC IGNITE

The McLean 5K begins at 8 a.m. in downtown McLean. After the race, participants can visit the Old Firehouse Center for IGNITE: Relax & Recover, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The post-race event offers participants an opportunity to unwind after completing the course.

Monday, Oct. 12: Touch A Truck

Children can explore trucks and specialty vehicles from 9 a.m. to noon in the McLean Community Center parking lot.

Participants will have opportunities to climb aboard vehicles, meet the people who operate them and learn how they work.

Saturday, Oct. 24: Haunted Masquerade For Seventh- And Eighth-Graders

The Old Firehouse Center will host a new Haunted Masquerade party for seventh- and eighth-graders from 6 to 9 p.m.

The event will feature a live DJ, an open dance floor and light refreshments. Registration is required, and costumes are encouraged.

Saturday, Oct. 31: Festival Of Frights & Trunk Or Treat

Families and children of all ages can celebrate Halloween at the Old Firehouse Center from 5 to 8 p.m.

The free event will include Halloween activities, decorated trunk displays, games and treats.

Other MCC Initiatives

Monday, Oct. 19: Macdonald Performing Arts Scholarship Application Deadline

Applications are due for the Macdonald Performing Arts Scholarship Competition, which is open to eligible students in the McLean tax district.

The competition gives young performers in music, dance and theater opportunities to present their work before a panel of judges and compete for scholarships supporting their continued arts education.

Wednesday, Oct. 28: MCC Governing Board Meeting

The McLean Community Center Governing Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the center. The meeting is open to the public, and the board is scheduled to vote on the fiscal 2028 budget.

Wednesdays: Open Game Nights

The Old Firehouse Center will host open game nights from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Participants can drop by for game play and opportunities to meet other players.

Mondays, Wednesdays And Thursdays: Drop-In Mah-Jongg

Free drop-in mah-jongg is available to players of all skill levels. Registration is not required.

Sessions take place Mondays from 7 to 10 p.m. at the McLean Community Center, Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Old Firehouse Center, and Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m. at the McLean Community Center.
