MCLEAN, VA — An arts center or similar use is envisioned in the revised master plan for Clemyjontri Park in McLean, a park designed for children of all abilities.

The Fairfax County Park Authority board made the revision to the master plan last week. The original master plan in 2002 led to the development of a large accessible playground, parking lots, storm water management facilities and perimeter trails. Another undeveloped phase called for preservation of the home on the property and surrounding gardens for ceremonies and social uses. The new revision in the master plan provides an arts center use as an alternative option for the house and gardens area.

"This potential center could further arts and educational opportunities by providing new spaces for galleries, studios, and classrooms," the park authority's master plan web page states. "Such a facility would provide a creative space for the community that is integrated into Clemyjontri Park. Additionally, the alternative concept includes reuse and redevelopment of the existing homestead, gardens, social spaces, outdoor classrooms, a rentable gazebo, additional parking, and public art to enhance the trail experience."

The master plan is intended to guide any future improvements and changes to park properties and facilities. No changes to the playground or recreational amenities would be considered.

The master plan revision follows a process beginning with a public meeting in December 2020. After introducing a draft concept to the public, a 30-day public comment period followed. Park authority then refined the draft master plan based on feedback and held another public meeting in October 2021. Another 30-day comment period followed, and the final draft was shared.
