Fairfax County Students Design Satellite

Fairfax County students designed a satellite launched into space with a NASA rocket. Now they're at it again.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- A group of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology students could launch its second satellite into Earth's orbit as soon as next year. Earlier this year, students received approval from NASA's CubeSat program to launch a satellite with a rocket sent into space, The Washington Post reported.

The students hit a number of milestones when they launched the first satellite in 2013. Not only were they the first to successfully build the "CubeSat" satellite among mostly university and non-profit groups, the students made history with the first high school-made satellite launched into space.

If launched, the satellite could stay in orbit up to 2019.
