Hurricane Irma: Fairfax County Residents' Family Lost Homes

Here's how you can help a Fairfax County family's relatives that are without food, water and their homes after Hurricane Irma.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA—Fairfax County residents rallying in support of relatives devastated by Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean.

Giovanella de Weever and Eva de Weever-Lista of Centreville say on a GoFundMe page they are originally from St. Maarten and have family members there. A few relatives remain unaccounted for days after the storm hit.

"In the blink of an eye, many of our family members lost their homes and livelihoods. All of my relatives, many who you know-are without basic life necessities such as running water, electricity, food, clothes, and shelter," they say on the page.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the page raised nearly $23,000. All donations are going toward needed supplies. The two say other family members are heading to St. Maarten with supplies, and they are in need of certain supplies. These include:

  • Canned and dried goods
  • Water
  • Water purification tablets
  • Portable desalination systems
  • Essential medications/First Aid supplies
  • Baby formula/diapers/wipes
  • Basic hardware and tools
  • Flashlights/batteries
  • Family evacuation efforts

At its worst, Irma tore through the Caribbean as a Category 5 storm. At least 25 people in Florida have died under Irma-related circumstances, and six more in South Carolina and Georgia, many of them well after the storm had passed. The death toll across the Caribbean stood at 38.
