MCLEAN, VA — The McLean Community Center's governing board voted to cancel community-sponsored events in April and May due to the new coronavirus outbreak. That includes McLean Day on Saturday, May 16, McLean's biggest event of the year. Absentee voting for MCC's board election is underway, and in-person voting will happen on May 16.

MCC executive director George Sachs recommended the cancellations based on guidance on large gatherings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Fairfax County Health Department. McLean Day normally draws around 10,000 people.

MCC's governing board election features three adults and nine teens running for three adult positions and two youth positions (one each in McLean, Langley high school boundaries). Absentee voting is available to residents of Dranesville Small District 1A through 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13. Under a memorandum of understanding, MCC will hold in-person voting on Saturday, May 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the community center, 1234 Ingleside Avenue, McLean.

A resident can request an absentee ballot by mail, calling 703-744-9348, TTY: 711, or emailing elections@mcleancenter.org. Because adults vote for only adult candidates and youths vote for youth candidates only, residents should indicate how many adult or youth ballots they need. All absentee ballots will be mailed to homes with a pre-addressed return envelope for each ballot. The McLean Community Center is closed until further notice, but if it reopens, ballots can be placed in the ballot box at the center or at the Old Firehouse, 1440 Chain Bridge Road.

In addition to the April and May event cancellations, MCC, The Alden Theatre, the Old Firehouse Center and the McLean Project for the Arts are closed until further notice. MCC staff members are working through the closure and are available by email.
