McLean Family Wins Governor's Community Service Award

Gov. Terry McAuliffe honored the Stewart family of McLean for providing free dental services to needy families.

MCLEAN, VA -- The Stewart family of McLean won a Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Award for providing free dental services to needy families. Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced the winners in Richmond Thursday evening.

George and Connie Stewart and their children Julie, Joy, Jenny and George were recognized as "Outstanding Volunteer Family." They have volunteered their time and provided funds to the cause through the Arlington Free Clinic. The family also runs Doorstep Ministries, a nonprofit to help people one-time financial assistance for emergency expenses.

Another local winner was Grand Involve, a community organization that brings adult volunteers into Fairfax County Public Schools to help with different academic skills. The group won "Outstanding Community Organization."

Nine recipients in all were recognized with awards.

"“We should all strive to follow the examples set by these individuals, organizations, and companies and give back to our own communities, which helps to make Virginia such an extraordinary place to live and work," said McAuliffe.
