McLean Man Dies In Weekend I-66 Crash: Police
The fatal crash involved eight vehicles, including an overturned tractor-trailer.

CENTREVILLE, VA — A McLean man was killed in a crash involving eight vehicles on Interstate 66 on Saturday, Aug. 24, according to Virginia State Police.
The crash happened before 11 a.m. on westbound I-66 east of exit 53 (Route 28). A 2007 BMW heading west hit the vehicle ahead of it, causing the BMW to also collide with a tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer struck other vehicles before overturning.
One of the vehicles, a Toyota Rav4, went off the road, over the jersey wall and caught fire. The driver, Joseph Castellano, 28, of McLean, was pronounced dead on the scene. His wife, the passenger, went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the Washington Post.

A GoFundMe account was set up to help the Castellanos with funeral, memorial and hospital costs. The account has raised more than its $10,000 goal.
The BMW driver, Jonathyn Bland, 40, of Centreville, and tractor-trailer driver, Shahbaz Singh, 34, of Fairfax, went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They were charged with reckless driving. The Post reports three other people were injured.

The crash closed the westbound direction of I-66 for hours. WTOP Traffic data shows the area of I-66 between Route 28 and Fairfax County Parkway has seen 444 crashes—the second highest number of crashes to date in 2018 and 2019. The highest number of crashes—585—in this time period were on the section between the Capital Beltway and Nutley Street.
