It's summertime, which means it's time for outdoor fun. But where are the best places to go near McLean for your summer fun needs? We're highlighting the best the area has to offer when it comes to public parks.
Located just up the Potomac River from McLean is Great Falls Park, definitely one of the most well-known parks in the Potomac region with its steep, jagged rocks creating spectacular waterfalls. The park spans 800 acres and offers one of the best nature experiences this region has to offer.
George Washington was actually involved in building a canal near the falls called Patowmack Canal, which ultimately didn't end up being commercially viable. Washington had hoped to make the Potomac River navigable as far as the Ohio River Valley. You can still see parts of the canal in the park.

Today, Great Falls serves as an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Washington, D.C. You can schedule a Ranger-led field trip in the park, go kayaking on the river, hike on its trails or stop by the visitor center to learn more about the history of Great Falls and the Patowmack Canal.
Great Falls Park closes at dusk, so all activities must take place during the day and overnight camping is not allowed. However, there are a number of nearby parks that allow overnight camping if you'd like to experience the outdoors at night. A full list is located here.
