MLK Jr. Day 2019 In McLean: Events, What's Open, Closed

A number of services will be closed for the federal holiday commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Plus see Day of Service volunteer events.

While Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday was on Jan. 15, the federal holiday honoring the civil rights leader always falls on a Monday in January. This year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 21.

Fairfax County government offices and public schools will be closed on Monday, Jan. 21 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Virginia state offices will also be closed on Friday, Jan. 18, for the Lee-Jackson Day, a state holiday. A few services will operate, including transit and recreation centers.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is considered a national Day of Service. Here are the openings and closings to be aware of around Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as well as Day of Service volunteer opportunities around McLean.

Holiday Openings and Closings

Fairfax County government offices: Closed on Jan. 21.

State offices: Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed Jan. 18 and 21.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Closed on Jan. 21.

Community Centers: McLean Community Center is closed on Jan. 21. Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) programs, activities and facilities will be closed Jan. 19-21.

Fairfax Connector and Fastran: Fairfax Connector bus service will operate on a holiday weekday schedule on Jan. 21. Fastran will not operate on Jan. 21. See www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector for more information.

Libraries: All Fairfax County libraries will be closed on Jan. 21.

Metrorail: Metrorail will run on a Saturday schedule on Jan. 21 from 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Off-peak fares will be in effect and parking will be free at Metro lots and garages. Blue and Yellow Line trains will run every 20 minutes. There will be single tracking between Pentagon City and National Airport on Jan. 19-21. For more information, visit WMATA's weekend page.

Metrobus: Metrobus will operate on a Saturday and supplemental schedule on Jan. 21. Visit www.wmata.com for more details on specific routes.

Parks: Colvin Run Mill and Sully Historic Site are closed on Jan. 21. The Historic House at Green Spring Gardens is closed while the Horticultural Center is open. All other county-operated parks are open.

Post offices: Closed on Jan. 21.

Recreation centers: Open on Jan. 21.

Recycling: I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax) and I-95 Landfill (9850 Furnace Road, Lorton) are open on Jan. 21.

Trash pickup: There is no change to the county trash and recycling pickup on Jan. 21. Have your materials at the curb or street line by 6 a.m. Contact private providers for any schedule changes.
