Newborn Giraffe Already More Than a Handful (Pics)

Virginia Zoo welcomes latest addition, all 152 lbs. at birth. And he's expected to grow fast!

The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk has welcomed an oversized new addition.

A baby Masai giraffe was born on Thursday, weighing 152 pounds and already 75 inches tall.

Giraffes have a unique birth process — moms give birth standing up and the baby is walking within the first few hours.

“We are keeping a close watch on mom and baby,” said zoo doctor Amanda Guthrie. “So far the baby looks healthy, Imara is an experienced and attentive mother and we’re optimistic that she’ll do a great job.”

The baby can already be viewed in the indoor giraffe exhibit, according to the zoo.

“This birth is important to the Species Survival Plan (SSP) as Billy, the father, is a genetically important male for the species,” said zoo manager Joseph Svoke, noting there are only 100 in North America.

The Masai giraffe is the largest subspecies of giraffes. The males can grow up to 19 feet and weigh more than 4,000 pounds.
