Sign Displaying "Stuff Some Adults Don't Want You To Read" Removed At Langley High School

McLEAN, VA — A sign drawing attention to books that have been controversial among some parents has been removed from Langley High School's library.

Fairfax County parent Carrie Lukas shared an image of the display, which included about 10 books and a sign that said, "stuff some adults don't want you to read." The display was up in the library for an eighth grade parents night.

"What books a library holds is debatable, but this is just 'nah nah!' childishness," Lukas tweeted about the display.

One of the books in the display was "Gender Queer," which along with "Lawn Boy," had been the topic of a debate on whether the books should be in high school libraries. Fairfax County Public Schools initially removed the two books and conducted a review due to complaints that the books contained pedophilia and sexually explicit material. The books were returned to libraries after FCPS determined the books did not contain pedophilia or material that qualifies as obscene as defined by Virginia law.

The Langley High School library display drew an apology from the principal, who said the sign was removed.

"We strive to create a welcoming, and inclusive environment where all feel valued and respected. The sign was incongruent with the beliefs of our school and our school division,"
wrote Principal Kimberly Greer. "Poor judgement was used in its display and for this I take full responsibility."

Lukas is also one of three parents seeking a lawsuit against Fairfax County Public Schools for its mask mandate despite Gov. Glenn Youngkin's mask opt-out order.
