Sprinklers Minimize Trash Fire Damage At Tysons Building

There were no injuries when a dumpster fire broke out inside an apartment building.

TYSONS, VA — No one was injured when sprinklers put out a dumpster fire inside a Tysons apartment building Sunday, Sept. 22.

Units responded around 1:04 p.m. to the 1500 block of Boyd Pointe Way, which appears to be the location of Adaire Apartments. The fire broke out in a dumpster inside the building, and sprinklers put out the fire.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue estimates the sprinklers saved about 800 people in the building. Damages were estimated to be $650. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fairfax County Fire Chief John Butler recently spoke out against a state decision regarding fire sprinkler requirements for new construction. According to WAMU, the Virginia Board of Housing and Community Development did not approve a code change on Sept. 16 requiring fire sprinklers in new townhouses and single-family homes. DC, Maryland and California require sprinklers in new one and two-family homes, but Virginia is among the states not allowing fire sprinkler requirements for these homes, says the National Fire Protection Association.
