To Kill A Mockingbird

This summer at College Tutors, we are hosting various book studies, the first of which is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. With memorable characters like Atticus Finch and powerful themes of good and evil, To Kill a Mockingbird is a must read for all.

Our second meeting with high school students is 7:00 PM tomorrow at our Learning Center. Here's what's on the agenda:

Read: Chapters 1 - 11

Discussion questions:

Why does Scout get into fights with Cecil Jacobs and her cousin Francis? What do their comments suggest about Maycomb as a community? What does Scout’s response reveal about her?

How would you describe Atticus Finch as a parent? How does he treat his children? What kinds of things does he want to teach them?

What connection might there be between what is required of Atticus to shoot the mad dog and what is required of him to defend Tom Robinson?

We will also be going over vocabulary words and talking about the novel in context. Did you know Harper Lee was a child when the Scottsboro Trials occurred? How do you think this event might have influenced To Kill A Mockingbird?

We are bound to have insightful and dynamic discussions with a novel like this! There are still spots open for teenagers interested in encountering great literature.

What about you, do you remember reading To Kill A Mockingbird?
