Tony Award-Nominated 'Spring Awakening' Coming to McLean Soon

The Alexandria-based academy Metropolitan School of the Arts will be performing five shows at 1st Stage at the end of July.

The Tony Award-nominated show "Spring Awakening" is coming to McLean this month, thanks to the Alexandria-based academy Metropolitan School of the Arts.

Students of the MSA are putting on their fifth student-directed and produced show, which they will perform at the end of this month at the 1st Stage Theater at 1524 Spring Hill Road in McLean, according to an MSA statement.

"Spring Awakening is based on Frank Wedekind's groundbreaking and controversial play, as well as Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s brilliant rock score and book," the statement notes. "It's the story of a sexual awakening, youth revolt and self-discovery into a new century. It's 1891, and grown-ups hold all the cards.

"Headstrong Melchior and naive Wendla stumble into each others' arms, passionate and curious, while anxious Moritz struggles to live up to the stringent expectations of society," it continues. "With only each other for guidance, this group of young men and women travel the fraught and rocky path of adolescence, discovering their bodies, their minds, and themselves along the way. An electric, vibrant celebration of youth and rebellion, Spring Awakening fuses issues of morality, sexuality and rock and roll into a story that packs a powerful emotional punch."

Tickets cost $20 per person. The performance dates are Friday, July 29 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, July 30 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, July 31 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. You can purchase tickets online at www.metropolitanarts.org.
