Last year, Fairfax County recommended against traditional trick-or-treating in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance. In 2021, county government said the tradition can go on with precautions. Families are recommended to keep trick-or-treat activities outdoors, wear a mask, avoid crowded doorsteps, keep six feet of distance from other households, and wash hands or use hand sanitizer before eating candy. Residents should stay home if they've tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 10 days or been in contact with someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
Residents who hand out candy are encouraged to set up an area outside for candy. Candy can be spaced out so multiple people don't reach into the same bowl, or creative ideas like a candy chute can be utilized.
