U.S. News Best Colleges: See Virginia, DC Schools On 2019 List

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — U.S. News & World Report is out with the latest edition of its best colleges list. The rankings released Monday reveal the top colleges in the country for 2019, including the best public schools, the best value schools and the top regional colleges and universities. Several Virginia and Washington, D.C., institutions rank high nationally or regionally, with two making the top 10 rankings of sub-categories.

On the publication’s overall list of best national universities, Princeton University was ranked No.1 for the eighth year in a row. Harvard University ranked No. 2 on the list while Columbia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University and the University of Chicago tied for No.3.

In Virginia, several schools made the overall list of best national universities. The University of Virginia ranked No. 25 on the list, while College of William & Mary was No. 38, Virginia Tech is No. 76, George Mason University is No. 136, Virginia Commonwealth University is No. 157, Regent University is No. 201, and Old Dominion University and Shenandoah University are tied at No. 215.

These DC universities are ranked among the best national schools: No. 22 Georgetown University, No. 63 George Washington University, No. 78 American University, No. 89 Howard University and No. 129 The Catholic University of America.

The Virginia Military Institute ranked No. 4 among the top national public liberal arts colleges.

Several Virginia schools fared better on U.S. News’ list of top public schools. The top national universities are:

No. 3 University of Virginia, No. 10 College of William and Mary, No. 30 Virginia Tech, No. 67 George Mason University, No. 80 Virginia Commonwealth University and No. 121 Old Dominion University.

Among south region universities, James Madison University is No. 2, Christopher Newport University is No. 4, University of Mary Washington Is No. 7, Longwood University is No. 8, Radford University is No. 18, Virginia State University is No. 29, and Norfolk State University is No. 36.

“A university is not successful if it does not graduate its students, which is why the Best Colleges rankings place the greatest value on outcomes, including graduation and retention rates,” Robert Morse, chief data strategist at U.S. News, said in a press release. “By including social mobility indicators, U.S. News is further recognizing colleges that serve all of their students, regardless of economic status.”

U.S. News explains that its rankings are calculated based on 16 measures of academic quality. The publication groups schools by their academic missions into 10 categories that are then used to determine 10 distinct rankings. The distinct rankings include best national universities, best public schools and so on. The publication also made some notable changes to its methodology, including adding social mobility indicators, eliminating acceptance rate as a factor and reducing the weight it gives to measures like SAT/ACT scores.
