Reston Community Players — “Rehearsal for Murder”: Based upon the 1982 film, this show, as any good mystery does, will surely have you wondering, “Who did it?” From 8 to 9:30 p.m. at The CenterStage, Reston Community Center – Hunters Woods. Saturday, Jan. 17: Musical Memorial
9th Annual Memorial Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Maestro Dingwall Fleary will lead the Reston Community Orchestra in a musical salute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. An integral part of Reston’s weekend of celebration and remembrance, the concert features the works of African-American composers, as well as works inspired by the civil rights movement for which Dr. King gave his life. From 4 to 6 p.m.at Reston Community Center – Hunters Woods. All ages. Free admission; donations appreciated. For information, call 703-390-6166.

Garden Design Workshop — Three Morning Lectures + Three Afternoon Work Sessions: Learn do-it-yourself garden design and walk away with a design for your own garden. This three-session workshop includes morning lectures on landscape design basics, followed by afternoons of individualized help on your plan guided by landscape designer Amy Neiberline. The Fabulous Five Senses — A Dinosaur Show: The GoodLife Puppet Theatre presents a story of how a variety of animals and children can help a dinosaur puppet collect the five senses. Campfire Saturdays at Royal Lake: Join us for a campfire where adventure awaits as you explore the woodlands and lakefront spots where wildlife hides and resides. Ballroom Social Dance: Put on your dancing shoes and join the monthly Ballroom Social Dance featuring complimentary refreshments and a cash bar. All skill levels welcome! Arrive early for a 30-minute mini-lesson on the cha-cha from 7:30 to 8 p.m. The social dance is led by a professional ballroom instructor from 8 to 10:30 p.m. in the McGuire-Woods Gallery (second floor of W-16), Workhouse Arts Center. $10/person (Ballroom Social) and $5/person (mini-lesson). Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration: The phenomenal impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is chronicled in this compelling dramatization. You will be inspired by the story of this great leader’s struggle and his dream of lifting “our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.” From 2 to 3:30 p.m. at The Alden Theatre, McLean Community Center. Snapshots — Portraits of a World in Transition: For the Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration, Anna Deavere Smith, who has been listening to people across the country from all walks of life for the last several years, will share her observations. To illustrate her goal of bringing “people across the chasm” of what she calls the “complex identity of America,” she slips in and out of character during the course of her presentation, recreating a diversity of emotions and points of view on controversial issues.
