MCLEAN, VA — On Monday, residents and businesses in McLean will take a moment to honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17 is a federally-observed day of service. Volunteer Fairfax will hold a day of service, promoting volunteer opportunities residents can participate in remotely. Other volunteer options can be found at www.volunteerfairfax.org.
Great Falls Park will likely be busier than usual due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day being the first fee-free day for national parks in 2022. National parks that normally charge admission will be fee-free on Jan. 17.

As a federal holiday, MLK Day could also affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services in McLean.

Fairfax County government offices: County government offices are closed on Jan. 17.
Courts: The Fairfax County General District Court, Circuit Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed on Jan. 17.
Community centers: McLean Community Center is closed on Jan. 17. Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services community centers will be closed Jan. 15 to 17. Fastran will not operate on Jan. 17.
Fairfax Connector: On Jan. 17, Fairfax Connector will run holiday weekday service. For more information, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector.
Great Falls Park: Open with fee-free admission on Jan. 17. The visitor center is closed due to COVID-19, but visitor center restrooms are open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Matildaville & Old Carriage Road Trail restrooms are open park hours from 7 a.m. to sunset.
Libraries: Library locations are now closed on Sundays and Mondays. See hours for other days at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/branches.
Metro: Metrorail and Metrobus typically run on a Saturday schedule on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Due to the continued impacts of the derailment and 7000-series investigation, Metrorail service continues to be reduced. Visit www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables for more information.
Park authority: Check back for holiday hours for Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2022 from the park authority.
Post offices: Closed on Jan. 17.

Trash and recycling: There is no schedule change for county collection customers on Jan. 17. Private collection customers should check schedules with their hauler.
Trash and recycling centers: The I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road) and the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Road) are open regular hours on Jan. 17.
Virginia DMV: All DMV customer service centers will be closed Jan. 17.
