Did McLean Dad's Doritos Ad Win Super Bowl Contest?
McLean resident Jason Johnson, 39, father of six, made the commercial on a budget of $100. Two winning commercials aired during the game.
UPDATE, Sunday, 10:15 p.m. The Super Bowl is over and you probably know who won the game. But do you know who won the Doritos “Crash the Super Bowl” TV commercial contest?
McLean resident Jason Johnson, 39, a creative director and the father of six children, was a finalist, but he didn’t win it this year (he’s entered in the past and we hope he’ll enter again). Two winning commercials aired during Sunday night’s Super Bowl— one chosen by voting fans and the other chosen by the folks at Doritos.

Johnson was not only competing for a chance to have his spot air during the Super Bowl, he was also going for a $1 million grand prize and a dream job at Universal Pictures. His ad was selected from nearly 4,900 submissions representing 29 countries around the world; Johnson’s spot is one among 10 finalist ads including a record four international finalists.
“I am a huge fan of Doritos!” Johnson said earlier in an email. “This contest has been a family tradition for us for a few years now. We have entered the contest three years in a row and each year the kids want to know when we are going to start shooting the new commercial. The kids get so excited when they see the final product on the Doritos.com website. The whole family has a blast making the commercial each year.”

Johnson’s commercial (watch it below) is dubbed “Trouble in the Backseat” and features a dad driving his kids and keeping a bag of Doritos all to himself in the front seat. Doritos describes it this way: Dad isn’t eager to share his Doritos. But the kids have other plans.
“I filmed the commercial over a couple of days in McLean with my kids and some buddies,” Johnson said. “I used the camera I owned and then borrowed a lens from my friend. I actually played the part of the police officer, though I am not an officer in real life. I purchased a police officer costume at a local party store. The siren you see in the ad is just a prop we used inside the car to create a more authentic effect.”
Here’s more about Johnson, from a bio posted to the Doritos Web site:
Jason Johnson is the ultimate family man. Growing up with seven brothers and sisters, no one is surprised that Jason now has six children of his own. The idea of kids getting the best of their parents has always made him laugh, sparking the idea for “Trouble in the Back Seat.” In fact, Jason was so inspired by his children that two of them made their acting debut in his ad. In addition to Jason’s job as a full-time dad, he also has experience working as a creative director, developing websites and dabbling in graphic design and advertising. He has always learned best by doing and taking in the behind-the-scenes experience—which is why he is passionate about the opportunity to work at a major film studio for a year. Jason would spend the $1 million grand prize upgrading his camera equipment, paying off his house, and of course—taking his family of eight on a well-deserved vacation.
