Another Dominant Victory for Oakton Girls

Four players in double figures lead Cougars to win over Jefferson

After getting off to a slow start, the Cougars pounded the host Thomas Jefferson Colonials 71-23 Tuesday night.

The Cougars had four players finish in double digits, led by senior guard Zora Stephenson who finished with 20 points. Junior guard Caroline Coyer finished with 11 points. Her backcourt-mate, senior Danielle Davis, had 10 points, and sophomore Elizabeth Manner also had 10.

After going up 14-0 in the first quarter, Oakton Coach Fred Priester subbed in his second team, but they scored just two points allowing Jefferson to climb back into the game and make the score 16-11 at the half.

The starters came back in the third quarter with a vengeance, outscoring their opponents 31-4 to put the game well out of reach at 47-20 going into the fourth quarter.

"Usually when you beat somebody by 40 or more, it's hard to think that you learned something from that game," Priester said. "Yet I think we learned a little about our strengths and weaknesses tonight from top to bottom."

Oakton utilized a full-court press throughout the game which frustrated the Colonials, one point forcing them into six turnovers in less than one minute, and dominated every facet of the game.

With the victory the Cougars remain undefeated on the season, and this is third time they've squashed an opponent by more than 40 points, after opening the season with a 90-20 drumming of Langley High School.

Their next matchup is their first true test of the year, with an away game at James Madison High School, the three-time defending Liberty District champions.
