Historical Individual Seasons: Ted Williams 1941
Stat Line: 37 HR, 120 RBI, .406 AVG, 2 SB. Age 22.
Everyone's heard about Ted Williams' incredible 1941 season. What many didn't hear of is that he was just 22 years old and in his third major league season. Coming off his first All Star Game, he had huge expectations for 1941. It's safe to say he reached them. In 143 games, he hit 37 home runs and batted .406, becoming the still-most recent player to reach .400 in a season. Interestingly, on the last day of the season (which happened to be a double-header), he was hitting .400, so Boston manager Joe Cronin offered to sit Williams to protect his mark. Ted pointed out that in fact he was not truly hitting .400, as if you extend his average out to four digits, it was .3996. He played and went 6-8, bringing his average up to the now famous .406. He finished the season leading the majors in runs scored (135), home runs, walks (145), average, on-base percentage (.551), slugging percentage (.735), and OPS (1.286). During the All Star Game that season, he went 1-3 in his first three at bats before stepping to the plate with two outs in the ninth inning. The American League was down 5-4 with two runners on base. The 22 year old Williams was their last hope, and he delivered with a three run, walk off home run to win the game. The home run came against Claude Passeau, who in 1940 had gone 20-13 with a 2.50 ERA.
