Community Forum Tackles Homelessness and Affordable Housing
Responses to Local Homelessness: What Can I Do? Hear voices of homelessness and find out how you can help on April 29 at Unity of Fairfax

A community forum on homelessness aims to help individuals, families, civic groups, scouting groups and organizations learn more about homelessness and affordable housing in Fairfax County and discover concrete ways to get involved and make a difference. The forum, “Responses to Local Homelessness: What Can I Do?” will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 29 at Unity of Fairfax, 2854 Hunter Mill Road in Oakton. More information is available at https://responsestohomelessness.eventbrite.com.
The stories of local people who have experienced homelessness will be heard through one of the speakers, as well as through a video created for the event by Picture This Video. A panel discussion will include Cathy Hudgins from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Tom Barnett from the Fairfax County Office to Prevent and End Homelessness, Ben Wagner from the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board, Kerrie Wilson from Cornerstones and Joe Fay from FACETS. Breakout sessions will focus on three topics: 1) Volunteer opportunities with local nonprofits with a special emphasis on youth and family volunteer opportunities; 2) Social and political action opportunities, with a focus on affordable housing; and 3) Respectful engagement with homeless individuals.
The event will conclude with an Information Fair with nonprofits which serve the homeless community, including Alternative House, Britepaths, Cornerstones, Elks Lodge of Fairfax, FACETS, Family Pass, Friends of Guest House, The Lamb Center, New Hope Housing, Northern Virginia Family Services, Shelter House, and Veterans First at Friendship Place. Each organization will have information available regarding volunteer opportunities and other ways to help.
