Nutritious Cooking Skills for Children

Girl Scout Gold Award Project

“Nutritious Cooking Skills for Children” taught children from under resourced families how to cook simple and nutritious meals with ingredients found in food pantries.

For my Girl Scout Gold Award project I addressed the issue of malnutrition in children, especially in under-resourced families and the need for children to learn about proper nutrition and cooking. I taught four cooking classes at Cedar Ridge Community Center and Crescent Community Center. The recipes that we made were breakfast sandwiches, granola bars, grilled cheese sandwiches, and soup. After two of the cooking classes, I had a registered dietician come in to speak about the importance of nutrition and how to make healthy choices. At the end of the classes the children received a cookbook with all the recipes that were made during the classes. Each recipe had a description of how it was healthy and options to make it healthier. After each class, they were excited to be able to show their parents how to cook the recipe they made that day. This project was a lot of fun.
