ALEXANDRIA, VA — After an IT error with the Virginia Department of Elections, Alexandria's registrar and other registrars across the state received additional voter registration applications.

The new registrations were from voters who filled out applications over the summer at the Department of Motor Vehicles from May to September of this year, according to the Virginia Department of Elections. The state sent the 149,000 voter registrations to Virginia's 133 general registrars on Monday.

According to the City of Alexandria, the city's Office of Voter Registrations and Elections received approximately 2,800 voter registration applications from summer registrations at the Virginia DMV. According to the registrar's office, staff "are working through the applications as efficiently as possible."

The state's new election law ensures that new voters can register with limitations up to and including Election Day. Voters who are not registered before Election Day can cast a provisional ballot. The registrar's office will then research the voter's ballot and determine if the voter is qualified and eligible to vote. The ballot and information will be sent to the electoral board to review and approve the ballot.

The Virginia Department of Elections also grappled with an error on a mailer sent to voters in towns within Fairfax County and Prince William County. The mailings directed voters in the towns to vote at an address in the City of Fairfax.

About 31,000 mailers with incorrect information were sent, including 25,000 to the towns of Clifton, Herndon, and Vienna in Fairfax County. The error also affected the Prince William County towns of Dumfries, Haymarket, Occoquan and Quantico.

Voters may also confirm their polling place at vote.elections.virginia.gov.
