25 Safest School Districts In Virginia

ARLINGTON, VA — Police, parents and educators are reviewing school safety after the Feb. 16 deadly school shootings in Florida and social media threats made in several Virginia school districts in the last week. One data compiler has revealed which Virginia school districts rank highest for safety.

Niche.com recently released its list of the Safest School Districts for 2018, which was created using information from the U.S. Department of Education, the FBI, parent reviews and other data. There might be some surprises for parents and educators, although perennial honorees like Alexandria City Public Schools, Arlington, Loudon County and Stafford County were in the top five slots.

Of the leader, Alexandria, one reviewer wrote: "I love how they embrace the diversity of the city and their dedication. The quality of your teacher is hit and miss but the majority are passionate and really care about the success of their students. T.C. also has abundant resources from the college and career center to tutors. They have SO many different clubs and activities, there's something for everyone. ... The administrators could be less picky about which students they choose to antagonize, but overall T.C. is a good school, it just needs improvement."

To compile the ranking, 50 percent was based on parent and student surveys on health and safety. Student absenteeism, suspensions and expulsions were also factored into the rankings, well as percentage of students referred to law enforcement and school-related arrests.
