Bike to Work Day Draws Cyclists from Across The Region

The Market Square pit stop encouraged Alexandria citizens to ride their bicycles to work on Friday

Celebrating the bicycle as a commuting option, the Washington Area Bicycling Association created pit stops in the D.C. metro region in honor of Bike to Work Day.  These pit stops were made in to educate new and interested bicycle commuters and to provide a collegial atmosphere among area cyclists.

The pit stop at Market Square in Alexandria had a variety of vendors to help fuel rider's hunger and to fix their bikes. Whole Foods, St. Elmo's Coffee Pub, Bread and Chocolate, and Brueggers offered sustenance in the form of bagels, fresh fruit and baked goods to riders. Bike maintenance stands were set up by regional bike shops including REI, Wheel Nuts and Spokes Etc. to help riders change tires and lubricate gears.

The crowd consisted of a wide variety of Alexandria citizens. There were families who biked together, commuters going into Arlington and D.C., and bicycle officers from the Alexandria Police Department.  The event also brought out Alexandria City Council members Rob Krupicka and Del Pepper, both self-proclaimed bicycle enthusiasts.
