Local Summer Reading Program Needs Your Help
The We Are Readers summer reading program is kicking off this week at the Ruby Tucker Family Center. They need your help to provide books to Alexandria children.

Remember how exciting it was to be 10 years old and discover your new favorite book? That’s the same excitement Jordan felt when he read The Lightning Thief with his Reading Connection volunteer a few weeks ago. Jordan didn’t just finish The Lightning Thief, he finished reading all five books in the series.....in less than a month!
We Are Readers!
We Are Readers is a terrific program that sends volunteers to read with children like Jordan in housing-crisis sites once a week to ensure they don’t lose reading skills over the summer. Studies have shown that at-risk kids can lose up to 2.6 months of instruction over the summer when reading and other skills may not be reinforced. The goal of the program is to have every child reading for fun at least 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

How You Can Help
ACTion Alexandria is running a book donation drive this week to collect 100 books for the We Are Readers program run by The Reading Connection. So far, Alexandrians have already donated 65 books! However, we still need 35 books to reach our goal.

On the Action page, click the Take Action button to donate a book to The Reading Connection's We Are Readers program. You will be sent to The Reading Connection's Amazon Wish List, where you can select a book (or 2) that will make a real difference in a child's life.
To make your donation even more meaningful, The RunningBrooke Fund, is matching the value of your donation up to $500!
Just one book will help children keep their reading skills over the summer and inspire more children like Jordan, hungry for reading experiences, to become lifelong readers.
