Multiple comments on social media noted that drivers often speed in the area to beat the traffic light at the intersection and said new businesses have attracted more pedestrians.

The organization Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets in January issued a report on near-misses in the city, finding a total of 155 near-miss incidents involving children in the city from January 2024 to December 2025. That was more than in any other Northern Virginia locality.

According to another report in August 2025, “Clusters of crashes occurred in the Old Town and Eisenhower East areas because of high pedestrian activity but in other sections of the city, relatively inferior road design in underserved communities probably weighs in as a significant factor.” However, North St. Asaph Street and Montgomery Street were not among the high-crash corridors identified.

The group also found that across Northern Virginia from January 2024 to April 2025, 21 percent of crashes involving pedestrians or cyclists resulted in serious injury or death and that such crashes peak between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Yesterday’s accident occurred around 5:30 p.m.

The report also found that the percentage of crashes involving pedestrians or cyclists in the region in 2024 was almost double the number of similar crashes statewide, 3.5 percent to 1.9 percent.
