Daily Coronavirus Case Count at 2-Month Low In Virginia

The 580 new cases on Wednesday represented the lowest case count since July 6.

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 580 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, the lowest statewide total since 354 cases on July 6. The seven-day average of cases is 890, compared to 1,010 a week ago on Sept. 16. The cumulative total of cases is 142,590, while deaths stand at 3,089 and hospitalizations at 10,718.

Two regions had new cases below 100, which is lower than their seven-day averages. Wednesday's cases included 157 in northern Virginia, 146 in the southwest, 115 in the eastern region, 89 in the central region, 73 in the northwest.

With a 5.5 percent positive average of PCR tests statewide as of Sept. 18, Virginia is approaching the 5 percent rate recommended by the World Health Organization for governments to allow reopening. There have been 1,922,606 PCR tests completed in Virginia, up 11,026 from Tuesday.

Statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations stand at 916, the lowest number since 902 on July 7. The breakdown of hospitalizations by region is 256 in the central region, 241 in the eastern region, 194 in the northern region, 142 in the southwest region, 83 in the northwest. There have been 17,038 total COVID-19 patients discharged from Virginia hospitals to date, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.

Current hospitalizations include 113 COVID-19 patients on ventilators and 215 in the intensive care units. Ventilator use is at 21 percent among all hospital patients, and ICU occupancy is at 80 percent. Virginia's 2019 average for ICU occupancy was 67 percent. No hospitals are reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment in the next 72 hours.
