After the news got out that the store is closing, a message thanking the community for their kind words was posted to the Why Not? Facebook page:

Hello everybody! These past couple of weeks have truly been among the most extraordinary in Why Not? history, and we have so many of you to thank for that..In this short time we have experienced the entire spectrum of emotions, from people’s eyes lighting up in joy as they share happy memories of Why Not? from decades ago, to customers (and staff members..) tearing up, realizing this really is the end of an era in so many ways. The overwhelming response from the community caught us somewhat by surprise, so it has been extremely busy and a bit chaotic at times, however, we did want to take a moment to let everyone know we appreciate your kind words and wishes of good luck, and are very happy to learn we have touched so many hearts over the years. Thank you so much for all the love.

No word on what business might move into the space; the building, at 200 King St. that housed the toy store was built in 1800 and is in a prime Old Town corner location at King and Lee streets.

Why Not? owner Kate Schlabach, also an owner of the building, says she will have a say in what business goes into the building.
