Storms Prompt Thunderstorm Watch, Flood Watch In NoVA, DC

Monday storms create a chance of damaging winds and flash flooding in the DC region, according to the National Weather Service.

VIRGINIA/DC — Flash flooding is possible during showers and thunderstorms Monday afternoon in the Northern Virginia and DC region, according to the National Weather Service.

A thunderstorm watch is in effect until 10 p.m. Monday for the District of Columbia, Arlington County, Alexandria, City of Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, Manassas Park, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Prince William and other parts of the region. The National Weather Service says the main threats are damaging winds and possibly an isolated tornado.

A flash flood watch was also issued from 4 p.m. through the evening. This includes the District of Columbia and Virginia localities of Prince William/ County, Manassas, Manassas Park, Fairfax County, Arlington County, Falls Church, Alexandria and Loudoun County.

Forecasters say afternoon and evening showers could result in "very heavy rainfall capable of flash flooding." The National Weather Service notes DC-Baltimore metro areas will be vulnerable due to heavy rainfall over the last few weeks.

If multiple rounds of storms happen, the National Weather Service expects the flood risk to increase. Rainfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour with higher localized amounts possible.

Residents should continue to monitor the forecast and prepare if a flash flood warning is issued. A watch means conditions make flooding possible, while a warning means flooding is about to appear or already happening.
